Oftentimes, coffee serves a simple, if utilitarian, purpose: waking someone up. It’s that much needed pickme-up to get up and get through the day.
It is not so often used as an artistic medium and expression, as one Ella Hipolito boldly does.
To understand her unsual artistic fusion, one must look to the very beginning. Ella’s artistic journey started in her hometown of San Mateo, Rizal. Here, nature was her backyard and animals her steadfast companions. She then went on to study and finish Fine Arts from The College of Holy Spirit.
She continued to cultivate her creative talents over the years, branching out to diverse fields and interests, from music to gastronomy. Ella’s resumé now boasts an eclectic range: artist, musician, chef – all passionsturned-professions.
Coffee on Canvas
Coffee painting is highly conceptual and breathing life into the process is almost experimental in nature. Ella takes great care in choosing and crafting elements and pieces, how they will react and blend with each other. Indeed, brewing her creations takes a certain skill and full understanding of coffee.
The result is a nuanced, textured, and provocative masterpiece of coffee’s journey to art.
Ella’s upcoming exhibition will be another tour-de-force in her coffee mastery. Some of her newest works on display are coffee interpretations of Filipino mythos: “Ibong Adarna”, “Maria Makiling” are imbued with Swarovski crystals into the canvas. Subjects are rendered in coffee silhouettes while in mid-jump in “Isa, Dalawa, Talon!”. Gaze warmly into her rural landscapes in pieces like “Atimonan, Quezon”, “Perez, Quezon”, and “Bukang Liwayway”.
In the hands of a creative genius like Ella, coffee has overcome its simple utility and has been elevated to art that stimulates and inspires. Ella Hipolito’s one-woman exhibit, Coffee Creativity, opens in May 22, 2016 at the Art Circle Gallery Café, located in Y2 Residence Hotel at Makati.
