Melchor Bernaldo was born in Baruen, Leyte. He is a self-taught artist from Bulacan, Philippines. He served for two years in the Philippine Marines and worked as a security guard in Alexandra condominums. He discovered his passion for arts when he was invited to create designs for the company’s annual Christmas decoration competition.
Despite having no background in art, he used his spare time to browse artbooks at National Bookstore and visit art galleries, seeking inspiration and guidance to develop his unique style. Bernaldo’s latest series, Bathalumans, was inspired by his search for inspiration and fascination with the deities worshipped in Philippine Mythology.
The portraits of goddesses are surrealistic, with mystified skin tones, colorful and detailed embellishments that reflect their divine nature. Bernaldo aims to inspire aspiring artists that a prestigious degree isn’t necessary to succeed. Focus, patience, and passion are key to improving in any chosen field.
